Calls for More Advocacy as Cases Rise

The Executive Director of Human Rights Monitoring Agenda, HURMA, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, has made a public declaration of the organization’s Zero Tolerance Policy to Domestic Violence.

The pronouncement was made during the Tuesday edition of the human rights radio program “Labe-Ofin” (Rule of Law) on Bond FM Radio Nigeria.

Comrade Buna stated that HURMA will not shield or spare any violator of domestic violence, regardless of status or background.

“Though the Lagos State Government is working hard to control the situation, reports reaching the HURMA office from victims and members of the public show that there is an increase in the rate of domestic violence. This calls for more advocacy and community action to battle the situation,” he said.

While emphasizing the need for mutual respect in marriage, Comrade Buna noted:
“Women should be submissive to their husbands, and men should understand that men and women are differently composed. This requires perfect understanding to manage the home. However, no reason should be welcome to attack a woman, and under no circumstance is violence justified.”

He commended men who demonstrate restraint and care in their homes, citing the Coordinator of HURMA in Mile 12 Unit, Comrade Pastor Ojetoto Festus as an example.
“He often says that his wife may be called ‘Mummy’ in Church by many, but to him she remains a baby he nurtures and cares for forever. That is the kind of mindset we need in our homes,” Comrade Buna added.

HURMA reaffirms its commitment to partner with the Lagos State Government, DSVA, community leaders, and religious bodies to end domestic violence across the 20 LGAs and LCDAs in Lagos.
