Suit No. FHC/L/CS/291/2026: INEC Responds to Rights Monitors, HURMA On Call to Reject Gov. Dapo Abiodun’s Senatorial Ambition – Rights Monitors

The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda, HURMA, has received the response of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to its letter dated 10th July 2026 regarding the nomination of Governor Dapo Abiodun as APC candidate for Ogun East Senatorial District.

In the INEC letter signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Dr. Rose- Oriaran Anthony and addressed to the Executive Director of HURMA on 22nd of July, 2026 with the title:
“RE: REQUEST TO SUSPEND THE NOMINATION OF GOVERNOR DAPO ABIODUN AS APC SENATORIAL CANDIDATE FOR OGUN EAST SENATORIAL DISTRICT PENDING THE DETERMINATION OF SUIT NO. FHC/L/CS/291/2026-HUMAN GLOBAL RESOURCES INITIATIVE & ORS VS INEX & ORS,” INEC acknowledged receipt of HURMA’s letter dated 10th July, 2026 on the subject matter. INEC letter reads further:

“The commission notes the concerns raised in your letter regarding the nomination of Governor Dapo Abiodun as the candidate of the ALL PROGRESSIVE CONGRESS (APC) for the OGUN EAST Senatorial District and your request that the Commission suspend or decline to process the said nomination pending the determination of Suit No. FHC/L/CS/291/2026.

“The commission further notes that the issue raised in your correspondence relate to matters which are presently the subject of judicial proceedings before the Federal High Court”.

In the letter, INEC stated that while it noted HURMA’s concerns, it is unable to suspend the nomination because the matter is already before the Federal High Court in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/291/2026.

INEC further assured that it will give due effect to any judgment or order of a competent court in the matter.

Reacting, the Executive Director of HURMA, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, said:
“We welcome INEC’s commitment to obey the rule of law. HURMA filed this suit in defense of due process and electoral integrity. We trust the judiciary to do justice and we call on all parties to respect the court process.”

HURMA reaffirms its commitment to defending democracy, fighting impunity, and ensuring that electoral laws are obeyed by all.
