Step Down on Executive Order on Land To Avoid Protest: Rights Group, HURMA Demand from Ogun State Govt.- Rights Monitors

The silent grievances of indigenes of Ogun State over the recently passed Executive Order on Land by Governor Dapo Abiodun has been channeled to the Ogun State legislative arms via a letter by the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA Global Resource Initiative). The letter cautions on the possible fallout of the law which is described as an over reach of Executive Power by the governor. The letter signed by the Executive Director of HURMA, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak request on behalf of aggrieved indigenes, for immediate withdrawal of the law as its already generating silent protest in the state. The letter reads:”We wish to call the attention of the Ogun State House of Assembly to the ongoing silent protest among indigenous families in Ogun State over the recent pronouncement of Executive Order on Land in Ogun State.HURMA as a mass based organization with branches across several States and Units in Local Government areas is privileged to certain information that need urgent attention.”From complaints received by our office from some aggrieved families, the recent Executive Order as presented by His Excellency, Dapo Abiodun sounds more of an over reach of Executive Powers, to witch-hunt and set the stage of strategic withdrawal of fundamental rights of individual, families, communities and monarchs from direct control of private land, which constitute over 95% of all Ogun land space. This is however considered as a threat and strategic infringement on the fundamental rights of residents on their indigenous statutory rights as original owners of land.”It is important to inform your Excellency that the legal and constitutional power of the Governor to hold custody of all lands in the State, on behalf of the people is not absolute.”An urgent call to clarify ambiguities cum withdrawal of the Executive Order on Land that is presently fueling grievances and anger in both indigenes and residents of Ogun State is hereby requested so as to prevent possible protest within the state and the nation at large”.
