MOHBAD’S DEATH: IGP DIRECTS LAGOS CP TO INVESTIGATE, ASSURES HUMAN RIGHTS MONITORS (HURMA), OTHERS OF JUSTICE – RIGHTS MONITORS

The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA), a mass based Human Rights organization has been assured of justice by the Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, over the death of a Nigerian youth and musician, Ileri-Oluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popular known as Mohbad.

This assurance of justice on the death of Mohbad was given to HURMA and other concerned Nigerians on Saturday 16th September, 2023 at the Police Airwing Hangar, Muritala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos where the IG issued a direct and urgent directive to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, to initiate a swift and comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of the late Mohbad.

The directive was consequent upon the agitation of the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) among other rights groups as well as growing public concerns over the circumstances sorrounding Mohbad’s death.

In a recent statement by a concerned Nigerian, Omole Ibukun titled: “JUSTICE FOR MOHBAD: NIGERIAN POLICE ON TRIAL”, Omole who wrote Abuja captured the general concerned of many Nigerian youths who are angry at the circumstances and events that led to Mohbad’s death, especially when the late Mohbad had earlier petitioned the police on 27th of June, 2023 about a serious threat to his life by some influencial people in Lagos State, but his petition neglected and not attended to.
“The Nigerian youths are worried about the safety of poor Nigerian who are not powerful nor members of the rulling political class.”

The Lagos CP in response to IGP’s directive has therefore constituted a Special Police Investigation Team with the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to coordinate the Investigation.

According to statement by the Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, and made available to Rights Monitors News, the special police team, which comprises seasoned homicide detectives, has been tasked to aggregate all allegations, suspicions and insinuations from various sources on the death of the singer and undertake a professional, diligent and timely investigation with a view to establishing facts, clearing all doubts and ensuring that justice is manifestly served through a meticulous process that will deploy all requisite protocols (which may include exhumation), as well as technical and scientific tools that are vital to the detailed investigation of homicide allegations of this nature.

“In aid of this initiative, the Lagos State Government has pledged its total support to the Special Investigation Team in all ways required to guarantee a diligent investigative exercise. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave this assurance while consulting with the State Commissioner of Police earlier today on how best to ensure that the case is expeditiously investigated and justice delivered promptly.

“Meanwhile, an appeal is hereby made to the deceased’s family, friends, business associates or anyone with useful information that could aid the investigation to kindly share same with the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department on 08036885727 and to optimally support the Police in the drive for a conclusive investigation of the case.

“The Lagos State Police Command assures that progress of the investigation will, as much as legally and professionally permissible, be shared with the general public accordingly.”

The Executive Director of Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, has also assured members of the group and the public of the competency of the Nigeria Police Force and finally enjoined all to have full trust and as well be fully ready to give all available assistance.
