New Naira Note to Assist Poor Nigerians: Buhari Replies Rights Group HURMA – Rights Monitors

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the leadership of a lead right group in Nigeria, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) that his stance and that of the CBN Governor on the new naira note design policy is simply to assist same poor Nigerians the body is fighting for and not to increase their suffering.

This statement was in reaction to the open petition sent by the Human Rights group, HURMA to the presidency over the ongoing hardship the poor masses are facing and the present threat and fear due to non availability of the newly designed Naira Note.

The leadership Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA Global Resource Initiative) reflected recently on the present state of the nation and the need to react to several complainants from its poor members across the country. The meeting of the national leadership of HURMA which included the Board Chairman and head of legal, Lekan Alabi Esq; lawyer Kunle Adegoke SAN; Lawyer Shakirullah Obale; Lawyer Matti; Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, Executive Director among others deliberated on the present state of the nation and the urgent need to save the poor Nigerian masses.

The president on Saturday, Jan 28 through a statement by his spokesperson, Alhaji Garba Shehu maintained that the decision to redesign the naira was targeted at addressing hoarding of illicit funds and this is for the good of the poor Nigerians.

While acknowledging reports of long queues at banks among other challenges as presented by the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA), Buhari said the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is working on initiatives to “prevent chaos over the distribution of the new notes.

“Government will ensure that citizens are unharmed in their businesses and no disruption is caused to the entire supply chain arising from the currency swap due to end shortly,” the statement reads.

This, he assured, will stabilize and strengthen the economy.

While taking note that the poorest section of society is facing hardship as they often keep hard cash at home for various expenses, President Buhari gave strong assurances that the government will not leave them to their own fate.

He reiterated that a number of initiatives by the Central Bank and all commercial banks are underway to speed up distribution of the new notes and do all that is necessary to forestall cash squeeze and chaos.
