On the ongoing trial concerning the alleged public harassment of a veiled Muslim woman (Eleha) by some people in Ijora area of Lagos State which include a Naval officer attached to Lagos Naval Base Headquarters in Ijora, Human Rights/ Anti-Corruption body, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda HURMA has sent a petition to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and also the office of the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice for intervention to avoid breach of public peace which may arise from protest by aggrieved Muslim men and women.

Meanwhile, the presiding Magistrate on the matter at Sikiru Adagun Magistrate Court, Mba Street in Ajegunle, Apapa, MRS, T.B ARE has adjourned the case from 10th till 24th of June, 2025 for continuity on the ground that no lawyer appeared in court for one of the accused present in court, Mrs. Tawa Ojinja among other reasons.
The matter was first presented at the Magistrate court on Monday the 19th of May with only one of the two major accused, Tawa Ojinja present. She was transferred to a correctional center till bail conditions met. It was expected that the Nigerian Navy will present the second main accused, a Naval officer attached to Lagos Naval Base Headquarters who was released on bail at Ijora Police Divisional Headquarters to one Lt. Commander Koko, but the culprit has since remain at large and refused to show up in court as requested by the presiding Magistrate on the next adjournment date, 10th of June, 2025.

As a follow up in seeking justice through a petition to His Excellency, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State and also the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda HURMA in a petition titled:
“Alleged Public Harassment of an Innocent Veiled Muslim Woman By a Naval officer Attached to Ijora Naval Headquarters in Lagos State, A Call For Justice to Prevent Public Disorderliness and Breach of Peace”, has requested a proper investigation into the matter by the state government.

The petition signed by both the Executive Director of HURMA, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak and Barrister Shakirullahi Obale for Legal reads in parts:
“Though matter presently in court, the earlier arrested naval officer culprit was released from the police station to some senior Naval officers and has refused to show up in court. HURMA will therefore appreciate prompt intervention of the office of Lagos State Governor to ensure justice and afterwards prevent public disorderliness.”

“Attached with this letter is a detailed petition sent to the Naval Headquarters but yet to receive any official response.”
