The affected people had earlier sent a “Save Our Soul” message to the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda HURMA which led to the earlier visit by HURMA to the demolished site along with Rights Monitors News crew.
During the first visit, one Babatunde Osho who introduced himself as the youth leader of the residential cum market settlement of Pelewura claimed that over 40,000 youths are now jobless due to the demolition while several other thousands are affected.

The Lagos State government through the chairman of the demolition project, Hon. Fouad Oki however responded to the HURMA’s news report through a phone call directly to the Executive Director of Human Rights Monitoring Agenda HURMA, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak. Hon. Fouad Oki said that what Lagos State Government has in plan for Pelewura is development and not destruction. He however assured that provisions are already in place for all affected persons and will surely get to all.
He finally requested that the office of the Human Rights Monitors should get a list of affected people with documents as proof and all will be addressed.

“A committee has already been set up to handle the compensation exercise and some names have already been gathered while we face some delay due to some victims that were not available during the name collation exercise. “We have therefore extended the exercise.

“We will appreciate if all can submit their documents to your office and all will be attended to”.

Comrade Buna while addressing the Pelewura people on Thursday assured that a meeting will be arranged with their representative by the coming week where all issues will be hopefully resolved.
