Let’s Rule of Law Prevail: Human Rights Monitors, HURMA Petitions Police I.G; AIG SCID Alagbon Over Disregard to Court Rulling By Police Officer – Rights Monitors

A mass based Human Rights and Anti-Corruption body, the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA Global Resource Initiative) has sent a petition to both the Inspector General of Nigerian Police Force, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun and the AIG SCID Annex, Alagbon in Lagos State over the continued detention of Chief Adekintan Adenaike at the SCID Alagbon despite court rullings restraining police from same.

In a petition sent to the offices on Tue, Jan 28th with the headings:
“ALLEGED HARASSMENT, THREAT, AND DISREGARD FOR COURT PROCEEDINGS BY OFFICERS ATTACHED TO FCID, ALAGBON” the right group while commending the effort of the Inspector General of Police and the administration of President Bola Tinubu to protect citizens’ rights and uphold the rule of law, the group encourages the police on better improvement in adherence to international best practices and respect for the dignity of Nigerians.

The petition signed by the Executive Director of HURMA, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak reads in parts:”We have been contacted by the relatives of Chief Adekintan Adenaike concerning the above issue, despite a court ruling restraining the police from further actions.
“The restraining order was issued recently by the Ikorodu Division of the Lagos High Court in Suit No: IKD/18186/2024 between Chief Adekintan Adenaike (Applicant) and the Respondents, including the Inspector General of Police, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Alagbon, and ASP Alexander Oifoghe, among others. (Please find attached a copy of the court ruling).”
According to information available to us, the police, through the office of the AIG Alagbon, were investigating a land transaction case, during which the applicant was arrested and detained for over a week.
“However, it has come to our attention that the investigating officer, ASP Alice, has refused to appear before the Ikorodu High Court despite multiple invitations. Furthermore, he has not complied with the court’s restraining order, which remains in effect pending the determination of the suit.”
HURMA acknowledges and appreciates the efforts of the Inspector General of Police and the administration of President Bola Tinubu to protect citizens’ rights and uphold the rule of law. We also commend the ongoing improvements in police adherence to international best practices and respect for the dignity of Nigerians.
“Nevertheless, we humbly appeal for full compliance with the court’s ruling and for the police to allow justice to prevail in this matter.”
Information from members of the family who to HURMA office is that the 2 sureties to Chief Adekintan Adenaike were forced to bring him to Alagbon despite his weak health condition and made to sleep in detention as at Tuesday, 28 of January 2025. This is in total disregard for the court rullings.
